SUMMARY:Clara Lotta Dittmer | Espronceda Residency
DESCRIPTION:Young German artist Clara Lotta Dittmer (Hamburg\, 1992) is in Barcelona for her 6-week art residency in Espronceda\, won during the last edition of the Arte Laguna Prize in March 2019. \nEspronceda is an innovative contemporary art center in the heart of Barcelona that has been collaborating with the Arte Laguna Prize for years\, offering an art residency in a multi-disciplinary environment\, including a final exhibition in its wonderful spaces. \nWhen she found out that she had been chosen as the winner of this award\, Clara felt incredibly honored and excited to immerse herself in this new experience. “Getting out of daily life for 6 weeks and immersing myself in a new environment is a wonderful experience for which I am truly grateful.” \nAs soon as she arrived\, she immediately felt welcomed by the city and its people. The encounters she made during her stay were a source of great inspiration for her\, both artistically and humanly. Barcelona is a city full of color\, so it wasn’t hard to find motivation and inspiration.”  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBeing in Espronceda had a strong effect on Clara’s art\, especially on the size of her paintings. Having so much space to herself has allowed her to confront her skills in a new way and try many things. After this residency\, she feels much stronger and more confident as an artist.   \nThe result of her wandering around Barcelona\, getting lost in its streets\, listening to the city and the sounds of the people is the solo exhibition People\, which opens Aug. 27 in the spaces of Espronceda. The exhibition showcases a new series of portraits Clara painted during her residency. With People Clara aims to explore the mystery and complexity of human beings and existence. Her main interest is describing and observing the history and voices of people and their daily lives in the streets.    \nIn addition\, there will be a finissage on September 4 during which a talk will take place in which Clara and Savina Tarsitano\, artist and co-founder of Espronceda\, will reflect together on the role and impact of art residencies. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClara Lotta Dittmer \nClara Lotta Dittmer was born in Hamburg\, Germany in 1992 and studied painting at HAW Hamburg with Prof. Christian Hahn and Prof. Henning Kles. During 2013-2014 she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna\, Italy before graduating with honors from HAW Hamburg in 2015.\nMusic has always been a great source of inspiration for the artist\, especially the cello\, which she started playing at the age of 6. Clara has exhibited her work in Germany\, and is one of the finalists for the coveted Premio Arte Laguna\, in Venice\, Italy in 2019.

SUMMARY:Yu Kato | Art Stays Festival
DESCRIPTION:July 5\, 2019 marks the opening of the 17th edition of the ART STAYS Festival\, Slovenia’s largest festival dedicated to contemporary arts. Every summer the ancient town of Ptuj is transformed into a crossroads of art and culture that for years has attracted both promising young artists and some of the biggest names on the international art scene\, such as Ai Weiwei\, Yoko Ono\, Olafur Eliasson\, Gilbert & George\, Jake and Dinos Chapman\, and many others. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 17th edition of the festival\, entitled FUTURE – the vision of the world\, will feature international artists who explore the concept of the future and seek to answer\, through their artistic proposals\, the question: what does the future hold?\nThe more than eighty selected artists will present site-specific projects or works that offer a careful reflection on their research and practice not only artistic but also cultural\, social\, political\, anthropological towards the search for our Future. \nSince 2010 Art Stays has collaborated with the Arte Laguna Prize to select an artist to be given the opportunity to participate in this important international event. This year’s winner is Japanese artist Yu Kato (Tokyo\, 1985)\, a finalist in the sculpture and installation section of the last edition of the Arte Laguna Prize. During her artistic residency in Ptuj she will create a large spatial installation in the castle courtyard\, powered by nature\, which changes shape and color along with the wind.   \nIndeed\, the basis of Yu Kato’s installations is the attempt to create spaces in which it is possible for people to interact with their surroundings. The artist was chosen by the organizers of the Festival for her research that unveils\, through matter\, a new world of emotions by stepping outside the box and relating on the one hand to the viewer and on the other to time and space.  \nIt will be possible to meet the artist on Monday\, July 8\, during an open studio and artist talk to be held at the Ptuj Castle courtyard. DESCRIPTION:The solo exhibition “KYORAI (去来): Coming and Going” by Japanese artist Akihiko Sugiura (Hyogo\, 1979) is the result of a collaboration between Premio Arte Laguna and JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY(New Orleans)\, which selected Akihiko as the winner of the Special “Artist in Gallery” Award of the 13th edition of Premio Arte Laguna.\nThe exhibition will be on view from May 29 to July 15 at the gallery space in New Orleans\, USA. The opening will be held on Saturday\, June 1\, from 6 to 9 p.m.  \nJONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY was immediately attracted to the artist’s dreamlike figurative paintings. His body of work rejects conventional views of painting\, and his moving\, imaginative and slightly disturbing images challenge the very idea of portraiture through the use of landscape and abstract motifs. At the same time\, the artist wants to bring viewers back to reality through the inclusion of empty spaces and the arrangement of concrete materials on the canvas. The gallery has always sought to exhibit works by innovative artists who push the limits of their medium and style\, and Akihiko’s work succeeds in doing just that. In his paintings\, Akihiko depicts characters that represent various questions of modern times such as: Are we dead or alive? What is gender? Are humans something else? Real or virtual? As the artist himself states\, “In my work\, there is also a sense of being invited back into a world of imagination. Everything can be interpreted in many ways. DESCRIPTION:The solo exhibition “Crepuscolo” by digital artist Matteo Zamagni (Cesena\, 1992) is the result of a collaboration between Arte Laguna Prize and Anise Gallery (London)\, which selected Matteo as the winner of the Special “Artist in Gallery” Award of the 13th edition of Premio Arte Laguna. “Crepuscolo” is Matteo Zamagni’s first solo exhibition in the United Kingdom and will also mark the launch of the gallery’s second space in southeast London. \nThe exhibition includes a new series of digital prints and an exclusive screening of Zamagni’s short film “Horror Vacui” (2018). \nIndeed\, the gallery was immediately impressed by the imagery\, conception\, and execution of the video. Matthew’s handling of references to hyper-development and the global crisis is executed with an engaging skill and strong attention to detail combined with an impressive understanding of the medium.  \nSet in the context of the current climate crisis\, “Crepuscolo” explores the relationship between human hyper-development and geological growth. As the artist states\, “I wanted to create an environment where people can observe the relationship between humans and nature\, its repercussions and interdependence.” The exhibition focuses on the role of human activity in redeveloping and removing the Earth’s resources\, thereby disrupting the world’s balance. Zamagni’s kaleidoscopic visions of unnatural worlds where man-made industrial structures and architectures of density are depicted in a state of instability and excess carry the weight of impending ecological disasters.    \nWith the special “Artist in Gallery” awards\, the Arte Laguna Prize has created a format of collaboration with international galleries that gives them the opportunity to see a wide range of artistic proposals selected by an international jury and offers artists the chance to hold a solo exhibition in prestigious galleries around the world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMatteo Zamagni \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMatteo Zamagni (Cesena\, 1992) is an Italian-born artist and filmmaker who lives and works in London.\nHe uses technology as a tool to create immersive and interactive videos\, installations and performances. DESCRIPTION:La mostra personale “Dois Quartos 2/4” nasce dalla stimolante collaborazione tra il Premio Arte Laguna e la Galleria Fernando Santos\, che ha selezionato Alex Dorici come vincitore del Premio Speciale “Artista in Galleria” per il 12° Premio Arte Laguna. \nLa mostra attuale prende spunto da un’approfondita domanda introspettiva: “Qual è il ruolo dell’artista in una società consumistica\, tecnologica e globalizzata come quella contemporanea?”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpinto dal desiderio di espandere la sua ricerca visiva all’intero spazio della galleria\, Alex Dorici ha proposto un progetto espositivo antropocentrico\, ponendo il visitatore al centro delle sue installazioni. \nScotch Drawing è il nome dato a un insieme di interventi realizzati con il nastro adesivo. Questo materiale è presente nella sua ricerca fin dagli esordi ed è essenziale per il suo corpus di opere. Quando viene applicato all’installazione\, il nastro adesivo assume il ruolo di traccia delle pennellate su una superficie pittorica\, un modus operandi che può essere colto come una cifra stilistica unica che ha affermato le sue opere nel mondo dell’arte.   \nInstallation Rope is part of a set of site-specific works began in 2011. The material is naval rope\, with variable length and thickness\, depending on the space in which the installation is places. The rope is part of a reel which dialogues with the architecture of the space where the installation is placed. This subtle technique and material aim at distorting the space and the perception of the viewer\, inviting him/her to enter the installation and become part of it.    \nAlex Dorici\, of Italian and Portuguese nationality\, was born in Lugano (Switzerland) in 1979\, where he currently lives and works. At the beginning of 2000\, Alex followed his artistic vocation joining the Accademia di Belle Arti Aldo Galli in Como and graduating in 2005 in Painting and Engraving. As a student\, he won the first prize at the Concorso di studi Angelo Tenchio (Como)\, in the video art section\, with the short-film Saudade Itamar (2003). Since 2007 Alex Dorici’s artistic production has been profoundly marked by a persistent research of the dialogue between the work of art\, the surrounding environment and the public. Moreover\, the artist has constantly been challenged by the street art language and made subtle interventions\, using the tape in order to give a new dimension to the abandoned urban spaces. Sensitive to the frenetic consumerism and the consequent debris\, Alex Dorici paid a special attention to the use of recycled materials\, inviting to an ethical fruition of his installations.      \nGaleria Fernando Santos\, now celebrating its 25th anniversary\, was the first art gallery to settle in Miguel Bombarda Street\, Porto\, in what later became the so called Art District. Contributing to creating an unprecedented dynamic in the city\, Galeria Fernando Santos has been constantly carried on its activity with the goal to promote promising young artists within the art market.  \nWith the special prizes “Artist in Gallery”\, Arte Laguna Prize aims at creating a wide and versatile network within the international art world\, giving the artists the opportunity to collaborate with a large variety of galleries\, museums and foundations. \nAlex Dorici is on view at Galeria Fernando Santos from May 4th until June 29th 2019. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExhibition catalogue > \nGaleria Fernando Santos >
